Satellite TV vs. Cable TV — Which is Best?
Satellite TV brings viewers more and more reasons to enjoy watching television. Satellite TV technology enables people to watch TV with improved resolution and detail, with wider programming choices at much lower prices.
Yet, there are those that still fail to see the obvious advantage of satellite TV vs. Cable TV. Such that we have prepared a simple guide to help people compare Satellite TV and Cable point by point.
Better Picture, Better Sound
Satellite TV technology uses a parabolic receiving dish to receive signals straight from orbiting satellites. This signal allows hundreds of channels to occupy a single bandwidth – much more than what is physically possible with a cable line. A cable’s physical limitation allows only a fixed number of signals transmitted which, if exceed, increasingly lowers in quality. Note: better definition in a cable television almost always demand proportionally fewer programming choices, compared to Satellite TV which isn’t bogged down by such limitation.
Wider Program Choices
Satellite TV technology gives viewers a wider variety of programs to choose from, depending on the package subscribed to. To compare Satellite TV packages, two of the largest Satellite providers in US, Dish Network and Direct TV, features over a thousand channels between them: HDTV (High Definition TV) programming, over 500 commercial-free movies per month, over 90 pay-per-view (PPV) programs, with local channels (with digital picture and sound), commercial-free music channel, and more.
Although Cable TV may offer many channels to its viewers, quality will not be as good because of the physical limitation as stated above. Viewers then have to pay additional fees worth for upgrades just to have high definition picture and sound.
Cost
As an emerging and flourishing business, satellite TV providers can allow a deluge of discounts and promotions for its subscribers, at the cost that doesn’t even compare to Cable TV. Additionally, American service providers Dish Network and Direct TV have started to bundle their packages along with free personal equipment, such as receivers with universal remote controls, DVR (Digital Video Recording) receivers and HDTV receivers, thus reducing drastically the initial cost of having a satellite TV.
As comparison, the basic packages of satellite TV start at $24.99 and $29.99.
Cable TV fees on the other hand, average a whopping $39.99 per month, with lesser programming choices and quality-dubious channels. In some cities, the cost for cable TV is $37.30 a month for only 64 channels, plus $10.95 a month to add digital channels. Installation in one room is $39.95, plus $9.95 for each additional room.
Reliability and Customer Satisfaction
According to J.D. Powers and Associates, Satellite TV outages average only about 1%, despite the reports of weather-related problems. Dish Network and Direct TV are actually ranking higher than cable in customer satisfaction for the last five years.
Cable TV outages range from 3% to 5% every year. Cable companies ranked from good to poor in customer satisfaction.
Which is the Best?
So, we had just compared Satellite TV and Cable TV point by point. And here, we have an obvious winner. If you enjoy watching the biggest Shows, Movies, Sports, and News for the least amount of money, in digital video and sound, in HD format and recording them on a DVR receiver, go for Satellite TV. It’s better, clearer, cheaper and smarter.
