Satellite TV versus Cable TV: Why Satellite is Superior?

Share

Until recently, parabolic dishes of satellite TV began sprouting on homes everywhere around the world. This is because satellite TV has become a very popular choice for TV viewing and there are many reasons for this. While cable is still existent and reigning supreme in some regions, with the current trend of satellite TV it may very well oust cable TV as the king of TV viewing. Read on to know why.

Why Satellite TV…

Since its inception around late 1980s to early 2000, satellite television enjoyed landslide success in home viewing entertainment. Boasting more than a hundred of high definition channels, pay-per-view programming, digital music services, and high speed internet services at better, more affordable rates, satellite TV became the answer for customers seeking better services outside cable television.

Because satellite TV doesn’t rely on available infrastructure, customers living in remote areas aren’t burden with heavier rates as opposed to using cable TV services. Satellite TV also doesn’t get saddled by the physical limitations of a cable, meaning more channels can be made available without causing the video quality to degrade.

Why not Cable TV…

Criticisms of cable television mostly stemmed from its natural monopoly structure which made it resilient to any forms of customer dissatisfaction backlash. Most respondents felt that the cost of the cable service was too high and the product choices are limited, the quality of service too finicky, and the annual cable TV price increases too much. But because of the local monopoly structure and no direct competition, cable television’s status quo remained largely intact.

With the arrival of a strong competition, cable TV made a strong technological push to improve consumer satisfaction:  improved quality of service with their digital system, more programming choices, and better rates. This push also benefited from the recent worldwide digital switchover which happened until late 2009.
With digital cable, consumers can enjoy high definition channels, as well as the readily available bundled options, such as high-speed internet access and telephone - which are largely nonexistent with satellite TV.

However, cable television is still saddled with physical limitations; most identifiable is the cable itself. The existing cable infrastructure affects cable television rates. Those that live in remote areas will find cable TV’s installation price getting exponentially higher the farther they live from the main cable line. There are also increased costs as the provider updates its equipment, and service costs are also subject to local taxes.

With regards to reception, recent advances in compression technology can allow many TV channels to occupy the frequency space of a single analog frequency. Still, there is a limit on the number of channels onto a single frequency before the video quality of the channel starts to degrade. As being said earlier, satellite TV doesn’t get saddled such limitations, bringing more channels without sacrificing video quality.
