NASCAR Media Group tries its hand at 3-D
NASCAR Media Group and Turner Sports will produce and broadcast in live 3-D, the Coke Zero 400 Sprint Cup Race from Daytona International Speedway on July 3 on the TNT Channel.
NASCAR’s first 3-D production will be broadcasted online thru TNT RaceBuddy on NASCAR.com and on satellite TV thru Direct TV’s programming. NASCAR.com features 3-D feeds from the race plus a variety of HD POV cameras and user-selectable camera angles for the entire 6 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series that are televised on TNT.
The production team includes director Billy McCoy, technical producer Bill Chapman, and producer Matt Mosteller. TNT hired 3ality Digital to provide for the cameras and 3-D processing systems which include beam-splitter rigs, side-by-side systems and possibly two robotic cameras; Bexel Broadcast Services will supply the 3-D production truck and most of the technical infrastructure and other portable facilities required for this project; NASCAR Media Group will provide the power, fiber-optic cabling and other support services; and Turner shall manage NASCAR.com and will make the Sprint Cup Series race available in 3-D through Direct TV.
The 3-D production features two custom racing feeds produced specifically for 3-D viewing. The first provides action-packed footage of strategically-placed cameras around the tracks to maximize the effect of 3-D; while the second stream will focus on the pit row.
The TNT network will provide its viewers continuous coverage with no (national) commercial breaks. They will be featuring more of the unobstructed race action as compared to the standard telecast using a letterbox widescreen format.
NASCAR Media Group holds the exclusive right to NASCAR event footage, race data and content.
