Google Playing with TV Search Service via Set-top Boxes

According to various sources, Google has been experimenting with their search software on TV set-top boxes that enables media contents to be transmitted via internet.  Google is said to be working with Dish Network Satellite TV on this digital set-top boxes project.

Apparently, TV set top boxes has corresponding IP addresses that connect to the operators’ system.  This will allow TV viewers to search for videos in the internet; for example, videos from Google's own YouTube service. Needless to say, the service opens up broad advertising opportunities to Google and a lot of marketing companies.

Although Google does not confirm any of the assertions, the Journal says that testers of this service surf program channels with their TV set top boxes by typing queries on computer keyboards rather than using the traditional TV remote controls.

Google already earns $22 billion per year through online ads.  Adding TV in one of its medium could provide the company’s TV Ads service significant growth in its revenue.  The company could easily post targeted ads depending on individual or household viewing preferences on TV screens while viewers search for their favorite programs on the internet or as they watch YouTube videos.
