Cable and Satellite TV Firms Ask Government’s Aid to Stop TV Blackouts

Millions of Cablevision’s New York subscribers experienced air-time interruptions during the Academy Awards night last Sunday, March 7, 2010, when, due to a fee dispute, signal was switched off by ABC’s parent company, Walt Disney Corp.

Tensions have been building up between television broadcasters and several TV providers of cable TV and satellite TV over time. Service providers such as Time Warner Cable Inc., Dish Network Corp., Direct TV Inc., and Verizon Communications Inc. Broadcasting networks have been demanding more fees from the TV providers as a result of declining revenue ads that ultimately affects over-the-air programs that consumers are presently enjoying for free.

The group of Cable and Satellite TV firms have already filed a formal petition to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to aid in this rivalry.  Where the negotiations are still ongoing, TV providers including Time Warner Cable are vigilant in avoiding the recent signal disruption to become a precedent in the future.  They are hoping that FCC could prohibit TV signal being cut off during the talks and avoid further discomfort for their consumers.
