Dishes and Receivers
DirecTV, unlike Dish Network, does not make you purchase equipment directly from them. Most popular manufacturers make dishes and receivers that are compatible with the DirecTV system. When purchasing Direct TV equipment you should weigh up the options between manufacturers, the functionality provided by different systems and overall cost.
One caveat to remember, however, is that the dishes and receivers must work together in order to receive the mix of features you have purchased (this can complicate things considerably so be sure to check that what you are getting matches what you need). No matter which manufacturer you choose, the right combination of equipment will provide access to the more than 225 digital-quality channels that DirecTV offers. Plus, you will get built-in features such as parental control locks, a customizable on-screen program guide, and much more.

To enhance the reception of the TV signal and take
advantages of High Definition Television and Dolby Digital
surround sound.
There are two ways you can receive high-definition programming
via DirectTV. The first is to purchase an HDTV set with
the DirectTV System receiver built into the television.
The second is to purchase a DirectTV multisatellite
system receiver and connect it to a high-definition-ready
digital TV.
In both alternatives a 18" x 24" oval DirecTV Multi-Satellite
dish is also needed.
