Current TV connecting with the iPod Generation
The iPod has definitely taken the world by storm with millions of people carrying these small devices around with their favorite songs on them. Since the internet and the iPod are both very popular vices with the younger generation it was only a matter of time before the concept of bringing the two of them together happened. Throw in the TV to the mix and you have the ability to watch pods or movie casts on the internet.
Popular social networks such as MySpace and YouTube have become the online place for the younger generation to connect with one another. The majority of these pod casts are done by amateurs wanting to share a message, show something funny, or perhaps get their band noticed.
Al Gore presented the same concept a couple of years ago on Comcast digital cable. The concept was that if something as chaotic as YouTube could be a success why couldn't an organized site be designed? This concept is known as Current TV to many who have grown fond of it. Most of the pods shown on Current TV are under five minutes long to meet the attention span of the iPod generation.
Current TV has taken a new direction and is really doing quite well. They offer mini shows they call pods over the internet. The main differences between Current TV and MySpace or YouTube is that it is operated by professionals who are trained in the areas of programming, videos, journalism, and hosting. These pods even have commercials to help sponsor the pods.
Since Current TV is aimed at the target population between the ages of 18 and 34 it is a cross between YouTube and MTV. It is very comfortable and it is fun. It is quite organized as well though for a mature audience who still enjoys having some good laughs throughout their day. It mixes culture, music, technology, and current issues all into one. You just don't know what you will find on Current TV from one day to the next.
In only two short years Current TV has grown from a viewing audience of 17 million to more than 50 million. That is quite a substantial amount of growth. Part of this successful growth is due to contracts with major cable providers including those in the UK.
The actual financial status of Current TV is not disclosed but management will say they are a solid business and they are turning a profit. They also own all their own content so they don't have to pay for royalties. The goal of Current TV is to soon become the TV homepage for the iPod generation.
